DownloadBrussels, 5 December 2025 – In 2026, the members of the Multilayer Modular Flooring Association (MMFA) continue to combine natural aesthetics, durability, and responsible production. The sector seeks to meet the customer demand for balancing comfort, sustainability, and performance, reflecting a continued shift towards user-focused and eco-conscious living spaces – while keeping innovation and creativity centre stage.
Comfort for all the senses
Authenticity remains the dominant design language for 2026. Wood and stone decors continue to inspire, but with a renewed emphasis on genuine textures and nuanced details that mimic nature’s imperfections. Brushed finishes, deep embossing, and ultra-matte surfaces create authentic, tactile experiences that replicate the feel of real wood and stone and enhance the floor’s textural appeal.
In 2026, underfoot comfort and acoustic performance are as important as visual appeal. MMFA members register growing demand for layered constructions that deliver softness, warmth, and sound absorption through resilient materials. This is done by the addition of acoustic underlays, innovation in-click systems, grout line technology and underfloor heating compatibility that make interiors quieter and installation more seamless without compromising visual aspects. These developments address the expanding use of MMF in multifunctional living spaces, where performance and comfort must coexist.
Aesthetics meets creativity
Popular colour palettes are found across the spectrum of wooden tones, including raw wood, honey, light browns and smoked finishes. These neutral, calming tones harmonise with biophilic interiors that are increasingly favoured by consumers for their warmth and familiarity. Contemporary shades like sand grey, cream and greige are also in vogue, reflecting the popularity of nature-inspired designs interpreted through modern production technologies.
An expanding variety of formats and installation patterns sees herringbone designs, wide boards and long planks stand out as expressions of individuality and creative freedom. Alongside chevron and tile-like patterns, these designs complement a broad range of interiors, reinforcing both the versatility and the aesthetic appeal of multilayer modular flooring. Some brands are even extending their MMF floor offering to walls, creating new design opportunities for coherent interiors, where the same decor can be used on the floors and walls, in service of imaginative and flexible design choices.
Sustainability in focus
Demand for nature is not just surface-level – circular features are integral to product development, not optional add-ons. MMFA members continue investing in recyclable materials, bio-based components, and lower-impact production methods. Transparency in sourcing and lifecycle considerations have become essential to maintaining consumer trust and meeting regulatory expectations. The move towards eco-efficient design ensures that the sector continues to align aesthetic ambition with environmental responsibility.
Materially, this manifests as more interest in PVC-free floors. Natural materials such as cork are also gaining traction for their positive environmental performance. With more awareness on the principles of circular economy across the entire lifecycle, both consumers and manufacturers strive for products that either contain recycled content or can be easily recycled.
Material innovation and durability
Manufacturers continue to explore hybrid solutions that merge the best properties of different materials. Combinations of cork, PVC-free and rigid core flooring (SPC) deliver new levels of dimensional stability, comfort, and sustainability. The pursuit of advanced systems underlines the MMF sector’s commitment to technical excellence and user-oriented innovation.
This also has an impact on durability, which remains a central expectation from customers. Enhanced wear layers, scratch-resistant surfaces, and waterproof properties continue to define premium performance in MMF products. The trend towards versatile, long-lasting floors supports both residential and commercial applications, responding to consumers’ preference while improving environmental performance.
Authenticity reigns
Overall, 2026 positions MMF as a flooring solution that goes beyond surface design. Combining tactile and visual authenticity, comfort, durability, and sustainable innovation, MMFA members continue to position their products as a future-proof choice for modern living environments. Through a joint focus on innovation and sustainability, those choices are set to support healthier, quieter, and more ecologically responsible interiors across Europe and beyond.
